Ok, I’m the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceburg, TN and,so, I’m outrageously biased. Blatantly partial. Unashamedly outspoken on behalf of my church! Here’s how much… I even made a slideshow presentation about my Lawrenceburg TN Church.

First Presbyterian Church is 70 years old as of August 2008. We were founded by a missionary lady who began serving the Lord as a missionary after her retirement! Who says you’re too old to serve the Lord? She never planned to come to Lawrenceburg. In fact, her destination was Eastern TN and Western North Carolina where she suffered a health break down… In God’s providence she found herself here in Lawrenceburg TN. But she “bloomed where she was planted” as the saying goes. She gathered the faithful who were alienated from other churches that already existed in town and she reached out to those who had no church home and whom the world would call “fatherless”…maybe even “hopeless”.

As the Good News of Jesus routinely does, it turned these Lawrenceburg TN waifs into God fearing ADULTS in Lawrenceburg who still carry on the mission of this missionary lady, Miss Mary Kay Moody.

Today, First Presbyterian Church Lawrenceburg TN is a “Small (but growing) church with a Big Heart. We serve an Almighty God, we teach His Unchanging Truth, and we are the People who still believe in God’s Good News.” We exist so all people glorify God AND - Enjoy Him forever!”

Most of our members are NOT “Lifelong Presbyterians”. (One person even asked me if that was a “sentance” a judge might hand down!) Instead, we’re often considered a Lawrenceburg TN “Community Church” because so many people identify with our Bible teaching, our worship, and our mission… sometimes even all three!

My wife and I have endured a nightmare of sorts for several months which finally seems to be over thanks to some dermatologists in Nashville. Humor me, you may have this same problem one day. We opted for some other treatments in addition and they worked well for us. So we’d counsel people to be aware that sometimes they need to consult a specialist and that the health products we sell as home based business people may not be sufficient. I - someone quite suspect of the medical community - was amazed and delighted at the care available from our Dermatologists here. I would counsel any one with a skin care condition that’s out of the ordinary to consult sooner rather than later with a dermatology practice after this experience. As someone who “waits forever” to go to the doctor, this incident has changed my mind about contacting my physician in a more timely manner.

When I moved to Lawrenceburg, TN, in December 1998 I never dreamed that the Lawrenceburg TN Church I would end up investing the majority of my years here would be First Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceburg TN.

But over the last 4.5 years I have grown to love this Lawrenceburg TN Church … for what it was, what it is, and what it will be with God’s help.

There are plenty of Lawrenceburg TN Churches… over a hundred I guess. I am fascinated by the story of the founding though of THIS Lawrenceburg TN Church. It began in an unlikely way. First Presbyterian Church began when a genteel lady nearing “retirement” age and in her 60’s - Ms. Mary Kay Moody - volunteered for missionary service in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee as a Presbyterian missionary.

So how does a missionary from Mississippi to Eastern Tennessee plant a Lawrenceburg TN church? Good question.

The answer is/was exhaustion. She was sent from the mission field to the old sanitarium in Lawrenceburg TN and it was from her time of recovery that she planted the Lawrenceburg TN church we call “First Presbyterian”.

She ministered to other patients while she recovered.

She then ministered to poor children when she could walk.

She identified people who had faith but no family of faith and her work gathered the Lawrenceburg TN church that now meets at 252 Admiral Circle.

I try to recall the founding of First Presbyterian Church so that I can live out the narrative of its founding in my daily life today. Today, we as a congregation are seeking to live out the meaning of being a church founded by an unstoppable missionary spirit reaching out to those who have no family of faith.

That’s something worth living for I believe. And that’s why, for me, my Lawrenceburg TN Church is First Presbyterian Church!
